#AtoZChallenge W – Warwick Castle and re-enactments

Warwick Castle is a wonderful place for a writer to wander, soaking up the atmosphere and reliving history through the re-enactments. I’ve captured many images of Warwick Castle over the years and its been hard to narrow down my selection of photos to a few. I decided to share a few of the castle itself, but to mainly focus on the re-enactments which are lots of fun to watch.

#AtoZChallenge O – Orange (a celebration of colour)

Orange is a special colour in my household. My daughter’s name, Amber is on the colour wheel between gold and orange (according to Wikipedia) and my son used to have an obsession with the colour. The obsession controlled him and the choices he made, and if he didn’t get the orange cup or plate at nursery all hell would break loose.  Thankfully he’s calmed down a bit now. Now some pictures to celebrate orange.

I’ve taken better Robin shots, but this scruffy fellow is kind of sweet.

The next pictures are not great quality but I was sitting across the river, in the rain. I was so happy to capture the Kingfisher and his/her young. This year I promise myself I’ll get better shots.

Orange scents

The rose smells beautiful, but I’ve no idea what variety it is. The Mexican Orange blossom (Choisya) above will soon be awash with small white flowers that smell gorgeous. It’s a wonderful shrub that flowers at least twice a year.

Finally orange taste

Orange Vitamin C shake

I really enjoy making things with fresh ingredients. Whether I have grown them myself, or bought them from the shop. This is a little vitamin pick me up drink. It tastes really good drunk straight away.

  1. Start with:P1160418
  2. Chop it up (only used half a carrot)P1160421
  3. Stick it in the blender. And this is the result.P1160425

It’s really good with a bit of ice, but even better with a shot or two of vodka!

#AtoZChallenge L – Leaf quiz & Lovely Lilies

As last weekend provided some lovely sunny weather, I decided to take a few shots around the garden of the spring leaves. I’m a bit of a shrubaholic (if such a thing exists). See if you can guess these leaves… (there’s no guarantee I will remember all their names though!)

Now looking more like this

These last ones are special to me. If you’ve read my book Visions of Zarua you might know why. It’s not looking its prettiest at the moment, but give it a few weeks!

Lovely Lilies

Lilies from a visit to Kew Gardens last year. So many beautiful varieties. According to my foraging guide (see F for Foraging post) you can cook and store the seeds of the lily but the rest of the plant is inedible (stringy and horrible I scribbled in my notes, though thankfully he didn’t expect us to try any).

Hugh’s Weekly #Photo Challenge – Week 17 Calm

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve managed to participate in Hugh’s weekly photo challenge, but the idea of something that makes me calm was very appealing. Apart from taking a picture of a glass of wine (husband’s suggestion, not mine) this place does the job just as well.

This is Virginia Waters in Berkshire, a beautiful place to walk at any time of year. We’ve spent many happy family days wandering this Royal Park and its beautiful gardens. There’s interest all year round, but I love this spring morning where the carpet of blossom lays so thick it looks like snow.

These photos were taken on 31 March 2015, which became a very special day because we stumbled upon this grass snake basking in the sunshine. I was so happy to capture the shot, before I’ve only managed a disappearing tail! I was lucky this snake must have been feeling sluggish after a recent meal.

Hughes weekly #photo challenge Week 12 – Games

Over on Hughes blog, we’ve been set the photography challenge of ‘Games’ by Ronovan.

I’ve struggled with the theme this week. So I decided to make up my own game.

This object is something I brought back from holiday, something I really love to look at but not hold because it’s quite heavy. Can you guess what it is?

I’ll update you with the answer next week. In the meantime, why don’t you have a guess in the comments.

Hugh’s weekly #photo challenge: Week 11 – Rust

Soon after I posted a picture of ‘frosty the frog’ on #wordlesswednesday, I saw Hugh’s weekly photo challenge for a picture of a rusty object.

Well I love this trumpet playing frog and couldn’t resist entering him. My son rescued the frog from the River Thames several years ago. I think it was some time after the floods, so maybe the poor frog was washed out of someone’s garden. The frog, which my daughter informs me is actually called Ribbit, sits happily by our little pond guarding over all his froggy friends. He is getting quite rusty now, but we love the quirky character and are glad to give him a home in our garden.
