This weekly book sharing game was set up by Shelley Wilson. See the rules below.

First Line

‘Madame, Madame!’ I shout, and wave my arms around like I’m at a Take That concert, trying to attract Gary Barlow’s attention in the midst of thousands of other possessed fans.

Recruit fans

Escape to France with LATE SUMMER IN THE VINEYARD – Jo Thomas’s irresistible follow-up to THE OYSTER CATCHER and THE OLIVE BRANCH. ‘A fabulous French feast of fun’ Milly Johnson

Emmy Bridges has always looked out for others. Now it’s time to put down roots of her own.

Working for a wine-maker in France is the opportunity of a lifetime for Emmy. Even if she doesn’t know a thing about wine – beyond what’s on offer at the local supermarket.

There’s plenty to get to grips with in the rustic town of Petit Frère. Emmy’s new work friends need more than a little winning over. Then there’s her infuriatingly brash tutor, Isaac, and the enigmatic Madame Beaumont, tucked away in her vineyard of secrets.

But Emmy will soon realise that in life – just as in wine-making – the best things happen when you let go and trust your instincts. Particularly when there’s romance in the air…

Introduce the main character

Emmy – Caring, self-deprecating, naïve

‘Very nice. But I don’t think I ordered room service,’ says a sleepy American voice.

‘Shit!’ I spin round to what I thought was my pile of luggage that I’d left on my bed ready to unpack but it isn’t a pile of luggage at all. My luggage is now on the floor. My heart starts thundering like a young horse in its first Grand National. My eyes open wider and I clutch the towel more firmly.

It’s a person, a body, a man… in my bed!

Spark and Carousel by Joanne Hall

First line

Liathan ran, bare feet skidding on damp earth. The russet grass slashed his ankles as he crested the last ridge and slowed, hands on his knees, sucking air. The egg-shaped stone weighed down his pocket, and he took it out for another look. He turned it round in his hands, admiring the mottled markings. It was the kind of object the Philosopher used to find interesting.

Recruit fans (Blurb)

Spark is a wanted man. On the run after causing the death of his mentor and wild with untamed magic, he arrives in Cape Carey where his latent talents make him the target of rival gangs. It is there that Carousel, a wire-walker and thief, takes him under her wing to guide him through the intrigues of the criminal underworld.

But when Spark’s magic cracks the world and releases demons from the hells beneath, two mages of his former order make it their mission to prevent his magic from spiralling out of control. They must find him before he falls into the clutches of those who would exploit his raw talent for their own gain, forcing Spark to confront a power he is not ready to handle.

Meanwhile, a wealthy debutante learning magic in secret has her own plans for Spark and Carousel. But the sudden arrival of the mages throws her carefully laid plans into disarray and she unleashes a terrible evil onto the streets of the unsuspecting city—an evil only Spark’s magic can control.

Everyone wants a piece of Spark, but all Spark wants is to rid himself of his talents forever.

Allorise sat back on her heels, arms extended in a gesture of embrace, and sucked in a deep breath. The swirling spirit struggled, spectral fingers clawing at the drapes. But blood called to blood, and would not be denied. Slowly her father’s spirit was drawn towards her, until she reached out and caught it between her palms., crushing it into a bright ruby spark. She swallowed the spark, feeling heat travel down her throat and spread through her core.

FIRST LINE – To sleep is to die.

RECRUIT FANS (BLURB) – Three lives will change the destiny of nations.

Helikaon, the young prince of Dardania, haunted by a scarred and traumatic childhood. The priestess Andromache, whose fiery spirit and fierce independence threatens the might of kings. And the legendary warrior Argurios, cloaked in loneliness and driven only by thoughts of revenge.

In Troy they find a city torn apart by destructive rivalries – a maelstrom of jealousy, deceit and murderous treachery. And beyond its fabled walls blood-hungry enemies eye its riches and plot its downfall.

It is a time of bravery and betrayal; a time of bloodshed and fear. A time for heroes.

INTRODUCE THE MAIN CHARACTER – Helikaon; brave, heroic, legendary

DELIGHTFUL DESIGN –

lord of the silver bow

AUDIENCE APPEAL – Anyone and everyone who likes fantasy. There is the historical element as well, and the myths of Troy etc. I would say the Troy trilogy is some of Gemmell’s best work.

YOUR FAVOURITE LINE – Utterly impossible to choose. I think I love every line in this book! Each sentence means something, and hints at events to come. I’ll go with this…

‘What is wrong, Odysseus?’ she asked him. ‘Is it the coming battle? Do you fear for your friend?’

Odysseus shivered suddenly. ‘I am filled with fear, but not for his safety. Helikaon is a fighter, but there are depths to the man which should never be plumbed.’

20 pages later we find out what Odysseus feared…

Another Friday as crept up on me and this week I would like to recommend a book that has been on my Goodreads currently reading shelf since March. As soon as I finish last week’s recommended book Thief’s Magic, I will be starting on this one.

First line of the book.

Bodies pressed in on me from all sides.

Recruit fans by adding the book blurb.

Ian Troy is one of the Shinree, a fallen people with an inherent addiction to magic. Scorned and reviled for the deadly side of their spells, the Shinree are bred as slaves. Their magic is suppressed by drugs and used only as it serves the purposes of the other races. Descended from a long line of soldiers, Ian is conscripted into the Rellan army and made to fight in their longstanding conflict against the ruthless Langorian invaders. The downfall of Rella imminent, Ian goes against orders and turns to the Crown of Stones, an ancient Shinree relic of untold power. Ignorant of its true purpose, Ian uses the crown to end the war, and pays a terrible price. A decade later, still tortured by the aftermath of that day, Ian lives as a bounty hunter in self-imposed exile. Having renounced his magical heritage, he curbs his obsession with a steady stream of wine and regret. He struggles to put it all behind him, until a fateful encounter with a pretty assassin brings Ian’s past crashing into the present. Targeted by a rogue Shinree, and a ruthless old enemy, Ian is forced to use magic again. His deadly addiction is rekindled and his life of isolation is brought to a swift end. With the land he gave up everything to protect once more in jeopardy, and his people’s future at stake, Ian becomes embroiled in a violent race for control of the Crown of Stones. To save the realms and those he cares for, Ian must embrace the thing he fears most: his own power.

Introduce the main character using only three words.

The urgency in her voice tore at me. Aylagar was my Queen. She was my commander and my lover. The ground had settled all across the field. Weary bodies were rising up, raising their weapons to resume the killing. She could be in trouble.

But as I stared at the ring of vibrating, coloured stones in my grip, I knew what I had. And I realised I had no choice but to betray her.

From the beginning of the book.

‘He’d never heard of a person turning into a book before. How is that possible? he wondered.

I was made by a powerful sorcerer, replied the text.He took my knowledge and flesh and transformed me.

His skin tingled. The book had responded to the question he’d shaped in his mind. Do you mean these pages are made of your flesh? he asked.

Yes. My cover and pages are my skin. My binding is my hair, twisted together and sewn with needles fashioned from my bones and glue from tendons.
