#Bookreview Mageborn – The Hollow King book 1 by Jessica Thorne @JessThorneBooks #Fantasy

An excellent fantasy. Mageborn is one of those books you start and know you are going to love from the first page. And look at this gorgeous cover…

Blurb

A dark and addictive fantasy read for fans of Graceling and Sarah J. Maas. The life of an orphan soldier becomes entwined with that of the mysterious heir to the throne, whose very presence draws out the secret magic living inside her: a magic that breaks every law she is duty-bound to uphold…

The room is small and dark. Row upon row of jars line the shelves, each one sealed with blood-red wax. The seal’s mark is a twisted circle of briar with gleaming, gold-tipped thorns. And in each jar a flicker of forbidden magic dances… beautiful, but deadly.

Sold to the Crown in the aftermath of the Last Great War, Grace Marchant has never known her parents. Now, she trains as an elite soldier tracking down mageborn – those born with an ancient and long-outlawed magic – and destroying them if they don’t surrender their power to the Crown.

The mageborn who submit are collared, then handed over to the King’s cousin and heir: the elusive Bastien Larelwynn, Lord of Thorns, locked away in his shadowy workshop deep inside the castle. What becomes of them is hard to say – the Lord of Thorns keeps his secrets close.

Grace has always fought the voice inside her that questions whether the law is truly just – but when her closest friend is next on Bastien’s list, Grace’s loyalties are tested to the limit. Confronting Bastien – searching his strangely compelling obsidian-black eyes for answers – Grace is shocked to feel herself begin to change, to show the first signs of the wild magic she so fears.

Only the Lord of Thorns has the power to save her and the rest of the mageborn – if he doesn’t destroy them all first…

My Review

I actually read this book a few months ago and didn’t realise I hadn’t shared a review until I was looking through my Goodreads list for 2021.

Mageborn is so good that I can’t let it slip by without sharing a quick recommendation to all fantasy readers. It has a compelling storyline with plenty of mystery and the magic is excellently described. The whole world building is a great strength of the book (no wonder the author is teaching classes on it for the RNA!). I haven’t read anything by Jessica Thorne before so I was very happy to discover a new author to follow.

I loved the main characters, Grace and Bastien, and the turbulent relationship between them. The fact the story was told from their alternating viewpoints really strengthened my connection to them and I was desperate for them to join forces in more ways than one!

There are many twists and turns in the plot and I just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. It was an absorbing read and the ending didn’t disappoint. I’ve already bought the second book and hope to read it asap in 2022. I really hope Jessica Thorne writes book 3 soon.

The Lost Sentinel hits No.1 in the US! Plus it’s No.4 Amazon Best Seller of all fantasy books!

I wanted to type that title in full caps to shout about how happy I am this morning. To see my book baby in a no.1 position in the US is amazing.

Finally I’ve worked out a way to share the screenshots.

First the big one – No.4 in the top 100 across all fantasy books in the US!

I’ve also hit No.1 best seller in 3 categories Actions and Adventure Fantasy, Romantic fantasy and New Adult fantasy as per below.

This more than makes up for the fact I only had 3 hours sleep, what with the heatwave, a puppy stealing the bed (she also manged to kick me straight in the eye!) and a cat meowing half the night for god only knows what reason.

I also reached No. 2 in Coming of Age Fantasy and Epic Fantasy, and it’s No. 3 in Sword and Sorcery.

Finally it’s wonderful to see that The Lost Sentinel is currently at position 83 in the Top 100 Free Kindle chart!

I know this is fleeting and within a few hours things will change, but for now I’m going to enjoy it! Hopefully this buzz will get me through the rest of the day on such little sleep.

Don’t forget to pick up your free copy of The Lost Sentinel if you haven’t done so already. It’s only free for 2 more days.

The Lost Sentinel hit No 1 in the Top 100 free Amazon chart #fantasy

The Lost Sentinel is currently on a 5 day free promo and I have stacked ads to help me reach readers.

This morning I was excited to wake up to see The Lost Sentinel had hit number 1,2 and 3 slots in Canada for Coming of Age fantasy, Epic fantasy and Sword and Sorcery! Here’s the proof.

I have screenshots of the lists but I’m still having trouble downloading them to WordPress. It’s frustrating as I’ve been looking forward to this moment and I want to shout about how happy I am about these results!

I have a big ad hitting soon and and I’m hoping it will help me reach the big spot in more countries. Fingers crossed!

I’ll keep you updated and share my results at the end of the experiment. In the meantime, if you haven’t picked up your free copy of The Lost Sentinel, why not do it now? You can help me achieve my goal of reaching no. 1 in the Amazon top 100 free charts.

Thanks very much.

Day 7 of Silent Sea Chronicles Blog tour #fantasy #bookreview organised by @rararesources

Here comes some reviews today for The Sentinel’s Reign…

Seans book reviews – ‘This series is great and I just love to see what has happened from the first book to the second you see the growth of Tei who is the star of the show.’

Radzy writes – ‘It’s obvious the author has carefully plotted this series and put in many hours, to the point where I’m stunned this series hasn’t exploded to a mainstream audience yet. It’ll happen, and if you’re on the fence as to whether you should keep going with the series, the answer is yes. Continue, and then shout at all your fantasy loving friends to check this out as well.  …I should say somewhere however, that you don’t need to be an avid fantasy reader to enjoy this. It’s magical realism, and the undercurrent of fantasy is subtle enough, that even your fans of general epics will get a real kick out of this. It’s genre’d right, and is absolutely fantasy, but it’s not High, nor Paranormal.’

And a mid-read review on The Lost Sentinel

Writing with wolves – ‘…the world-building in this book feels super unique to me… I love that we get to experience three different parts of this world but my favourite is of course the exiled land of Kalaya; I love the tunnel system & the feeling of magic that flows out of the book during the scenes set in that part of the world. The island that Farrell lives on also intrigues me though & I’m excited to learn more about it as the story progresses.’

I just want to say a quick thank you to all the reviewers who have taken the time to read and review my books. I really appreciate your help reaching more readers. And of course a special thank you to Rachel for organising everything.

There are still three days to go on the tour so I hope you can join me for more quotes. I will just ask if these reviews have caught your interest, please consider picking up the trilogy for only £2.97. And of course, I’d love to see your reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

Thanks very much.

Day 6 recap Silent Sea Chronicles #blogtour #fantasy #bookreview

This is a quick recap of the reviews that came in on Day 6 of the blog tour.

A couple of new reviews for The Lost Sentinel

Mai’s Musings – ‘The Lost Sentinel is a rich storyline told from various viewpoints, and as I tried to work out how these would all intertwine over the course of the books, I found I was asking more and more questions, and reading faster and faster. It is the sort of book that you want to read slowly so it doesn’t end, but at the same time you can’t help but race through.’

The Treasure Within Blog – ‘Tei is a resilient character, but not a perfect person, by any means. She makes numerous mistakes and bad choices, and is forced to deal with the consequences of her actions. It’s refreshing to read a character who’s author really wasn’t afraid to supply with flaws – and it makes Tei feel much more realistic overall. In the writing world, a very focused- on fact is the necessity of providing characters with flaws – and I think Suzanne Rogerson has done a stellar job of it.’

The Sentinel’s Reign – book 2 in Silent Sea Chronicles also hit the spotlight with reviewers.

Jessica Belmont – ‘What I love about The Sentinel’s Reign is that it doesn’t struggle from “middle book syndrome.” The plot is great, the characters are developing, and this doesn’t feel like just a bridge from book one to book three!’

PageFarer Book Blog – ‘I said in my last review that Rogerson is good at writing bad guys; this is still the case but another thing to add to that is the depiction of injustice – something that always gets to me in the real world, and the unfairness of which I found was genuinely affecting me at times.’

The Treasure within – ‘A small character from the first book was picked up again in this narrative, and expanded into a more main member of the cast. She was honestly one of my favourites throughout the book – a young but powerful magic-wielder, with uncanny senses and the kindest of hearts. She stole my heart, and I hope to read more of her in the third book!’

A little late, but here are the links to some great reviews The Lost Sentinel received yesterday during the 10 day blog review tour.

On the shelf reviews – ‘If you love fantasy with intricate world building and a good old fashioned quest at its core then I think this is a book you would really enjoy.’

Bookworm for kids – ‘…it was an exciting read, and I have no doubt that fantasy fans will enjoy getting lost in this world and will look forward to reading the rest of the series.’

Day 3 & 4 Silent Sea Chronicles blog tour #fantasy #bookreview #indieauthor

I’m really pleased to share some more review quotes today. I didn’t get around to sharing anything yesterday so this combines day 3 & 4.

Silent Sea Chronicles Full Tour Banner

Firstly, this is a re-post of an older review and not part of the tour, but I had to include it anyway!  Strawberry Post – ‘Overall this is an amazing and gripping fantasy read… The world of Kalaya is rich and dark and I’m amazed at how sucked into the action I was reading this, and how unpredictable and dark the storyline is.’

Pagefarer Book Blog – ‘…Rogerson’s world-building and ability to weave separate storylines is capable – indeed, multiple viewpoints seems to be part of her M.O.’ ‘…stylistically she paints it all with an economy that allows the reader to meet her in the middle, and invest more in the world and characters she has created…’

Oddsocksandlollipops – A double review for books 1 & 2 ‘…I am loving this series so far! It’s got so many things I love, fierce female characters, magic and some really unexpected plot twists…’

Yesmoreblogs – Another double review split over these two blog posts below.

The Lost Sentinel – ‘I would give this book a 5/5 I fell in  love with it from the start. The world building is really well written. It feels like you’re in the book with these amazing characters and on the beautiful island of Kayala.

The Sentinel’s Reign – ‘I literally read this book straight after the first book and its just as good if not better. I can’t wait for the final book to be released to see how this trilogy will end. This book left a pretty much open ending which has literally had me on the edge of my seat and making me want more. I’ve been constantly thinking about what could happen in the third book. If you can’t tell I’m a bit excited to read it.’

Jess Bookish Life – ‘…one things I absolutely loved, besides the realism that some characters had, was the world building. This fictional fantasy world was so vivid in my mind thanks to all the descriptions. Overall, this is a fantastic adventurous, magical and drama fueled first novel, that took me on a journey and made me wish I could just visit Kalaya…’

Seansbookreviews – ‘Reading the first two books put a smile on my face.  It is a book like no other that I have read before which is saying something as I have read hundreds of fantasy novels.’

Radzy Writes – ‘…if you’re a fan of well crafted, elegantly cultivated novels which you can sink your teeth in for hours upon hours, I’d check this out. Likewise, fans of massive worlds such as Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, will be very happy with the Silent Seas Chronicles.’

The Lost Sentinel is One today! #fantasy #epicfantasy

Happy Birthday to The Lost Sentinel – a year old today!

It has received some wonderful reviews on Goodreads and Amazon so I thought today would be a great day to share a few quotes.

Praise for The Lost Sentinel…

‘Wow, after reading this book I am emotionally drained… but in a good way.’ MPB – My Peacock Books

‘Surrounded by some wonderful characters who get under your skin almost from the start Tei sets out on a harrowing journey which is heartwarming, moving, and terrifying all at once.
…this story bowled me over, it was an absolutely outstanding epic fantasy and the kind of writing fantasy authors should be aspiring to.’ Claire – Brizzle Lass Books

‘The Lost Sentinel contains plenty of action, intrigue, and challenges throughout, making this a thrilling fantasy adventure indeed. It’s the sort of book I enjoyed reading while reclining in a comfy chair on the sunny front porch of my house. It didn’t overwhelm me with information, itty bitty details, or dull monologues, but rather it whisked me away to someplace magical, alluring, and dangerous.’ Angela – Pooled Ink Reviews

‘This is the second book of Suzanne Rogerson’s that I have read so I felt that I had some sort of idea of her writing style but wow has she raised the bar. What makes it even more exciting is that this is the first book in a trilogy so I know it is going to be one hell of an epic journey for both the characters and readers alike.’ Susan Hampson – Books from Dusk till Dawn

‘The world building is incredible, it’s my favorite aspect of the book and I think it’s the best achieved. The descriptions are exceptional, without doubts.’ Sofia – A Book. A Thought.

‘I love the characters in this story. From Tei, the reluctant seeker, to Garrick, the hunky hero, you get a broad range of personalities. One of my favorite things about this author is her ability to develop her characters in a way that feels natural and flows well within the story. In the same way she develops her fantasy world. There is no heavy world drawing passages but you get your knowledge of the way things work as a natural part of the story. And then you have the story itself which is full of surprising plot twists, moves at a really great pace, and draws the reader in from beginning to end. As with the author’s first book, I cannot say enough good things about this book.’ Jennifer – A line from a book.

‘Great beginning to a fantasy series, can’t wait to read the rest.’ Jaye Dawes – jenanita01

Why don’t you help me celebrate The Lost Sentinel’s birthday by checking the book out for yourself. You can download a free sample and read it for free if you are a Kindle Unlimited member.

The Lost Sentinel - Suzanne Rogerson

The Lost Sentinel
by Suzanne Rogerson is an independently published fantasy book that sparked my interest. I was intrigued by the concept of a magic that connects the people to their land and the consequences that ensue when the magic-wielders are being persecuted. Sadly, it wasn’t easy for me to connect to the characters and understand their development since we have three perspectives and a lot of time jumps that make the connection difficult.

Goodreads summary:

The magical island of Kalaya is dying, along with its Sentinel. With the Kalayan people turning their back on magic, can Tei help the exiles find their new Sentinel before it’s too late?
Kalaya is controlled by the Assembly – set up to govern but now under the control of Rathnor, who is intent on persecuting those who have magic, many of whom have taken refuge in the Turrak Mountains.

Tei has been raised…
